Darkness, living and moving, grew around us. We had brought light, but that only ushered in the shadows that turned on us. Our weapons proved useless against the living figments of sight, and our spells and steam-works only made them stronger and sharper.

So, we put out the lights. All of them. Darkness hissed and cursed, lapping at us as if a blind toothless dog, and yet unable to touch us. Declawed and beaten, it proved little more than a minor nuisance as we pressed on.
