The seconds seemed to drag to eternity in a cruel trick of time dilation as we urged on the arrival of the elevator, our collective will manifesting to speed its glacial descent in the face of encroaching horrors.

Our backs to the rift in the wall, we formed a ragged phalanx to try and beat back the surging waves of tainted malice that sought to overwhelm us, as slowly, agonisingly - our salvation inched closer to hand.

At last, and with a sickening wet sound, the rift seemed to open itself to us as the strange elevator announced its arrival with a dismal thud. No sooner had we rushed into its corpulent embrace than with yet another sodden belch it sealed us within and recommenced its languid descent.

Waves of relief cleansed us of our fevered anxieties as we slumped exhausted against the pulsating walls. It was then a strange pattern of shadows splayed out from above, across the misted arc of our lamplight. Our weary eyes followed eight slender appendages as they tapered to a monstrous central arachnid thorax.
