Playing spectrum of Machina Arcana
Let's make a journey through the spectrum of understanding the game with using this inconspicuous Circular saw as an example.
Level 1

I can spend 2 stamina to attack a melee target with 2 high attack dice.
Level 2

I can spend 2 stamina to attack a melee target with 2 high attack dice.
Additionally my target has a reduced armor by 1 until the start of next Explorer phase.
Level 3

I can spend 2 stamina to attack a melee target with 2 high attack dice.
Additionally my target has a reduced armor by 1 until the start of next Explorer phase. To mark this lasting effect I place an explorer marker on top of this card.
Level 4

I can spend 2 stamina to attack a melee target with 2 high attack dice.
Additionally my target has a reduced armor by 1 until the start of next Explorer phase. To mark this lasting effect I place an explorer marker on top of this card.
While this card has an explorer marker I can remove it, which will stop the reduce armor lasting effect, but I will then attack any adjacent unit.
Level 5

I can spend 2 stamina to attack a melee target with 2 high attack dice.
Additionally my target has a reduced armor by 1 until the start of next Explorer phase. To mark this lasting effect I place an explorer marker on top of this card.
While this card has an explorer marker I can remove it, which will stop the reduce armor lasting effect, but I will then attack any adjacent unit.
I can spend essence either with using the first or second ability to increase that attack roll.
Level 6

If there is just an ethereal monster I can attack myself, barrel, or another explorer just to get the explorer marker on the card, but I can also attack any adjacent map tile space (passable or otherwise). I won't hit anything, but the explorer marker will still be placed on the card.
If I play the 2nd active ability on the turn of another explorer, they can increase that attack roll by using essence even if we are on other side of the same map tile.
FAQ

The lasting effect "Reduce armor by 1..." is affecting the target after the attack has been done, and resolved. The attack itself is not getting immediate benefit of this effect. But if the player would attack again in the same round, then the lasting effect is active, and the armor of the target is weakened by one.
If you remove the marker to use second ability, the armor of the target is not weakened anymore.
